Happenstance

This piece is one of the most meaningful works to come out of the studio — it marked the beginning of the entire Statement Centerpieces collection.

It celebrates the quiet magic of the unplanned — the kind of beauty that emerges when you let go and allow the material to lead.

Before this collection, I was working solely with black and white clay for my functional pieces. One day, while restocking clay, I accidentally picked up a bag of brown speckled clay instead of black. They looked almost identical in the bag. When I started shaping a platter from it, I noticed the color was off, and upon realizing my mistake, I initially dismissed the idea of working with it.

But since I couldn’t return the clay, I decided to use the entire bag—just so I could get back to my black clay as quickly as possible. I rolled a thick slab, with no plan or design in mind—just intuition. I shaped it freely, letting my hands guide the form.

The result was one of the most beautiful forms I had ever created. I glazed it in soft white to represent a clean slate — a new beginning — and finished it with bold brushstrokes that add movement and energy, reminding us to keep going even when things don’t go as planned.

That unexpected experiment sparked something new in me — a love for creating larger, sculptural centerpieces. When the piece came out of the kiln, the warm tone and delicate speckles of the clay completely won me over. Since then, I’ve created countless others inspired by that moment.

So yes — buying the wrong bag of clay turned into one of my happiest accidents.

It’s a reminder that some of life’s most meaningful turns begin as detours — unseen in the moment, but transformative in hindsight.

Created Once, Collected Forever

The Statement Centerpieces collection is made up of singular works — no editions, no reproductions. Occasionally, I create a series inspired by a shared theme, yet even within those, no two pieces are ever alike — each carries its own unique character and identity.

Once a piece finds its home, it remains exclusive to its collector — a true heirloom artifact, made to be admired and cherished.
